Got the chance to meet New Kids On The Block last weekend. I was fairly unfazed and, uh, somewhat nonplussed by the interaction. (I can’t say the same for my friend Laura. Her knees literally buckled when Jordan Knight hugged her. My only claim to fame was that I accidentally bopped Joey on his head with my elbow when I was putting my arm around him. Whoops.)
Since birth, I have never cared much for any boy band. Oh sure, The Beatles had a catchy ditty or two, but I would never consider losing my ever-loving mind over seeing them perform. See, I’ve always been a fan of girl groups. Back in my day, I practically wore out the grooves in my Exposé album. At one point I knew every intricately choreographed move in their video, “Come Go With Me”. Ahem, all four of them.
How bad was it? Remember the ‘80’s group Company B? Of course you don’t. They were a one-hit wonder. I actually went out and bought their cassette tape. Same goes for Sweet Sensation, Bardeux and The Graces.
When Bananarama burst on the scene in the mid-80’s, I was simply appalled when the British poptarts did not garner a Grammy nomination. “Cruel Summer” remains one of the greatest songs every produced in the history of music. Sure, they couldn’t play a single instrument … and they were notorious lip-syncers, but I couldn’t get enough of them. When “Venus” hit #1 when I was in high school, I was at the zenith of my nadir.
My fascination in girl groups waned in the ‘90’s. Oh sure, TLC and En Vogue whooped in soul sister solidarity, but I was ambivalent and unimpressed. And then The Spice Girls appeared seemingly out of nowhere and all was right with the universe once again. Girl power, indeed.
From The Supremes to The Bangles, I knew every word to every song they sang. Not to mention, I was crushed, CRUSHED, I tell you, when The Go-Go’s broke up. It was a sad day when The Go-Gos were gone-gone. And don’t even get me started on the The Dixie Chicks implosion.
If Exposé ever has a reunion tour, my head may simply explode. Screw 98 Degrees and Boyz II Men, I’ll take the chicks from Shakespeare’s Sister and/or Sister Sledge any day.
