I have a lot of friends with mad-crazy talent. Nearing the top of that list is my good friend, JC Fisher. Or Fishbone as most of us call him. JC hails from teeny-tiny Pleasant Hope, Missouri. He’s a definite charmer … with his devastatingly handsome looks and rural politeness. But don’t let that fool you … when he speaks, he’s got a bit of a Missour-ah accent. When he sings, however, he’s got the pipes of Pavarotti.
Fishbone sings classic old-school opera. The weird part? He’s self-taught. Oh sure, he’s had a few vocal coaches here and there, but for the most part that tenor voice that erupts out of him, he honed on his own.
JC and I met a million years ago when we worked at the Macaroni Grill together. He was a waiter/opera singer – famed for serving piping hot dishes seconds before using his pipes to belt an Italian aria. We got along swimmingly right off the bat. He was determined to make it big. And I was determined to ride his coattails to success. I made him a couple killer resumé tapes of his early performances and the rest is history …
JC scored a great gig as an entertainer on several cruise ships. I saw half the world traveling with him. From the South of France to South America, I became quite the globe-trotter thanks to Fishbone. I’ll always have fond memories of us lounging on the beaches in the Bahamas or going dog sledding in Alaska. Roam if you want to … roam around the world. It was always an adventure, that’s for sure.
JC eventually grew up and married his college sweetheart, Jennifer. Jen’s a former Miss Kansas – and, yes, she’s just as stunning as her husband. They are the most gorgeous couple ever. It’s nauseating really. The hunky opera singer and the beautiful pageant winner. God, I just threw up a little in my mouth typing that.
Recently, JC and a couple friends started the Texas Tenors … an opera-meets-country trio. Think Bocelli meets Big & Rich. Or if Dolly Parton and Placido Domingo had a love child. They’ve perfected their blend of southern-fried opera – and decided to take it on the road. Seems they’ve struck gold with their act. People are eating it up with a spoon. In fact, just last night they appeared on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”. It was America’s first chance to see them in action. It’s funny to think that a semi-classically trained opera singer might hit the big time doing twang-tastic country music. Apparently, it’s the best of both worlds – because they got passed to the next round. Be sure to vote … and I’ll be sure to keep everyone posted. Er, I’ll be sure to let all y’all know what happens next … y’all.
Man, is there anyone that you DON’T know?
Awwww, Michael the writer. Loved the article and thanks for the nice shout out. 😉 You’ve been such a good friend to us. I’ll be needing my “hair money” to keep looking good while traveling with the Texas Tenors, so be sure to call anytime you have work. Hee-hee. Love ya! Jen
