InfoComm ’09

I went to InfoComm ’09 yesterday with my friend Donnie.  Hopefully, that’s the first, last and only time I will have to endure that.  If he drags me to the event again – he’s going to be my “former” friend Donnie.  InfoComm is a TechGeekNerd’s paradise. It was like being trapped with the A/V Club for eight f’ing hours in a large convention hall.

I rarely sit in conferences or meetings – but apparently there are about a bazillion executives who do.  From what I saw yesterday, there appear to some mighty high-tech board rooms out there with every bell and whistle known to man.

Technology is amazing, but does not dazzle me in the least.  If you’re into video conferencing or any other multi-media service, this was the place to be.   Touch screen podiums.  Virtual reality teleconferences.  The list goes on and on.  I was INSTANTLY bored.  Polycom Schmolycom.  I spent a majority of my day dropping my business cards off to win free stuff.  I also swiped as much swag as possible.  At last count, I had about 412 different company pens.

I have to admit there were a few different gizmos that caught my eye.  I was impressed with the new 3-D TV monitors that don’t require glasses.  Now THAT was pretty cool.  And I was amazed by the amount of attractive women spouting off product knowledge right and left.  I guess men are more apt to buy the goods if a hot chick seals the deal.  They were speaking English – but I understood none of it.  “Here at Omnivex, our real time data tracking has both a display port as well as input with 20,000 lumens under 20K.”

Same planet, different worlds.
