When Friends Collide …

Know what I hate?  When my friends become friends with my other friends.  (Got that?)  It’s like worlds colliding!  Frankly, that pisses me off.  I keep my friend categories VERY specific.  The artsy-fartsy friends don’t hang out with the pretty friends.  And my stupid friends aren’t allowed near my Mensa friends (either of them).  And so it goes.  It’s the circle of life.

But accidents happen.

My New Year’s Eve EVE party is a prime example.  You have, under one roof, a wide mix of people with one thing in common.  Moi.  I figured they’d stick to their own little cliques.  Boy, was I wrong.  In less than a half hour, one of my married friends was making out with another married friend of mine.  It was like Armageddon … caused by foo-foo martinis.  Democrats were arguing with Republicans.  Straight girls were getting make-up tips from drag queens.  My friend Eric, a cowboy, was chatting up my friend Mithra, an Indian.  Thank God it only happens once a year.

Last week in NY, I went to go see “9 To 5: The Musical” with my dear friend Kati.  We’ve known each other for 25 years and haven’t killed each other yet.  Now THAT’S a dear friend.  I also invited my singer/songwriter friend Phil and his boyfriend to join us.  By the end of the evening, Phil & Kati had hit it off … ad nauseum.  They were chatty, playful and picked on each other most of the evening.  It was like I wasn’t even there.  They’ve now become Facebook friends.  He’s probably sent her an autographed copy of his latest CD.  And when Phil wins a Grammy, I’m sure he’ll take his BFF Kati to walk the red carpet with him.   (Note that they’re standing NEXT to each other in the picture.  Lord.)

I spent most of the day on Friday running amuck with Phil in NY.  Mercifully, Kati had gone home.  I don’t think I could have put up with their nausea-inducing banter for one second longer.  Although the minute Kati would have wanted to go get a pedicure with Phil, the friendship would have been over.  Phil hates pedicures more than life itself … so, regardless, I still would have been the friend to beat.

Thank GOD I’m here.

  1. Ok, first of all, first and foremost, primarily, number one, I’m sorry it’s taken me this long to respond here (I got the job!!!).

But second of all, B), next, I’m just sayin’ is all… I TOTALLY love Phil. I’m thinking about seeing if I can get him on the concert series at my church, don’t know how he’d feel about that, or they, but worth a try, especially considering that I’m on the committee putting the music series together. Might be just what we need. Phil is awesome, sweet, endearing, adorable, HILARIOUS, entertaining, interesting….. but not M2. YOU are my dear friend. Phil is only cool to me because of you. Without you, we’d never connect. It’s all about you girlfriend. M2 reigns supreme!!!

  2. p.s. I am anxiously awaiting his CD… sure to be on my iTunes favorites soon!
